What is an MOT?

An MOT test is an annual inspection to check that your vehicle meets the minimum acceptable environmental and road safety standards required by the law. Not having a valid MOT could result in a fine and penalty points.

An MOT does not cover the condition of your vehicle’s engine, clutch or gearbox – but it does look at other key components of your car, such as: the body of the car, vehicle structure, tow bars, fuel/exhaust systems, seatbelts, seats, doors, mirrors, brakes, tyres/wheels, lights, load security, the bonnet and windscreen, wipers, the horn, steering and suspension, as well as electrical components. A comprehensive list of everything that will be checked can be found on the government website.

How long does an MOT take to complete?

An MOT test generally takes 45-60 minutes to complete. Some Eurorepar Car Service centres offer waiting appointments. If you plan to wait with us while we carry out the MOT test, just let us know. We’ll do our best to keep you updated with the progress of your vehicle. If your vehicle passes, you will be ready to drive away immediately.

When does my MOT run out?

An MOT is required by law in the UK for any car that is three or more years old to ensure it’s safe to drive. Once your MOT test has been completed, you’ll receive an MOT certificate that is valid for the next 12 months. You can sign up to get free reminders by text message or email when your MOT is due on the government website. Without a valid MOT, your car is not considered roadworthy, and you won’t be able to drive your car or renew your vehicle tax and insurance.

What happens if my car fails its MOT?

If there is a problem with your vehicle during the MOT test, our testers will let you know what’s wrong and how to fix it. Advisories and minor faults will not prevent your car from passing but will need to be fixed. Major and dangerous faults will have to be fixed immediately and your vehicle won’t be allowed to be driven until it’s been repaired and re-tested.

What does MOT stand for?

Ministry of Transport. They originally created the test to determine if cars were safe to stay on the roads.

What are the consequences of not having a valid MOT?

If you get caught without a valid MOT, then it can result in fines of up to £1000 and three penalty points on your license if you’re driving in a dangerous condition.

What checks can I do to make sure I pass my MOT?

A lot of common failures could be prevented by checking simple things, such as faulty light bulbs, tyre condition and broken wipers. Looking after your car and checking that these fundamental things are in good working order before taking it to the garage will increase the likelihood of you passing your MOT. It does sound like a lot and there will be elements of your car that you won’t be able to check yourself, but there are many parts that you can inspect to check if they are in good condition.

Do I need any documents for an MOT?

It’s helpful to take along your current MOT certificate and your V5C Vehicle Registration Document, but your garage should be able to pull up these documents online.

Advice Eurorepar Car Service

  • There are some basic checks you can do yourself before visiting Eurorepar Car Service for your MOT…

  • … check your lights. Headlights, indicators, side lights and rear lights all need to be working correctly.

  • … check your wheels and tyres. Any damage to your wheels could cause an MOT failure, while tyre tread should be at least 1.6mm. Ideally you should change your tyres before they reach this level.

  • … check your brake lights. When you press the brake pedal, the red brake lights should come on. You might need a friend to help you, or simply reverse up to a wall or reflective surface to check yourself.

  • … check your number plate. Clean off any dirt and make sure your registration is clearly legible.

  • … check your fluid levels. Screenwash, engine oil and fuel levels being too low are all common causes of MOT failures. Top them up before your MOT.

  • … check your windscreen wipers. If your wipers leave streaks across the windscreen when activated, your vehicle could fail its MOT.
